Arts and Literacy Family Art Night

WHO WE ARE:

The CHFS Arts and Literacy After School and Summer Program addresses the educational needs of children by providing them with opportunities to create, think, communicate, and problem solve.  Program activities build literacy in the widest sense of the word through creative writing, the visual arts, theater, photography, video, creative movement, music, martial arts, media literacy, gardening, and Yoga.  The interdisciplinary curriculum builds upon the children's interests and strengths, using the same effective, holistic, multicultural approach which is the hallmark of all of CHFS's programs.  The program also offers art therapy, monthly Family Arts Nights with family literacy workshops, support for families, family educational trips, apprenticeships for neighborhood high school students, and comprehensive services through the agency's other programs.

OUR TEACHERS:

Our teachers are skilled educators currently working in their art form within their community, regionally, nationally, and internationally. They have dedicated their life to their artistic expression, live their artform 24/7, and use their talents to create engaging and dynamic classes that are historically informed, rich in culture, innovative and forward thinking.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ARTS AND LITERACY:

ARRIVAL/SNACK
Our program starts after the last school bell. Students enter the cafeteria for check-in and are then given time to eat a provided snack and socialize with friends.

HOMEWORK HELP
After snack, students are given time to complete any homework that they may have. During this time our teachers are able to assist students in any subject that a student may need assistance on.

CLASSES
After Homework Help, students participate in 2 session of classes. Each session is a different class chosen by the student. Classes are 50 minutes in length and focus on a particular Art discipline or Sport.

DISMISSAL/PICK-UP
After signing out, students can either walk home by themselves (with signed permission from a parent/guardian), or students are picked-up outside by a parent/guardian/authorized adult.

*PLEASE NOTE ABOUT PROGRAMMING DURING COVID: Currently, our programs are virtual only. We are working closely with the school to bring the program back to on-site classes as soon as possible. During remote (virtual) programming we will start our program day with Homework Help and then lead into classes.

EVENTS

FAMILY ART NIGHTS

FAMILY ART NIGHTS occur at the end of reach semester rotation. The event allows students to showcase the projects that they have been working towards during after-school sessions. The showcase is split into two categories: Visual Arts and Performances. Our Visual Arts portion is set up much like a museum exhibit where student artwork is hung on the wall for all visitors to see. Our Performance portions gather everyone into the auditorium where they will enjoy student performances from our music, dance, and theater classes.

POTLUCK DINNERS

POTLUCK DINNERS are a way for families to come together and enjoy food from various cultures. The dinners allow families to meet their child’s after-school friends as well as the teachers in the program. Dinner are scheduled in advance and families bring a dish to share with the group.

ENRICHMENT TRIPS

ENRICHMENT TRIPS occur during a few Saturdays a month as well as during school breaks. Students will be escorted by Arts and Literacy Teachers from the school to a designated cultural institution enabling them to experience Art (in any form) as an audience member. Students will also participate in enrichment classes that extend the classes that we offer during the week. These trips might be to Flushing Meadows park for Soccer, a dance studio for our Dance classes, a play for our Theater classes, or recording studio for our Music classes.
